This weekend I took advantage of the spectacular Sydney Spring weather and ventured no more than a few minutes from my own front door, and only moments from the Sydney CBD, to join a walking tour of some of the city’s colourful inner-city suburbs, the creative hubs of Surry Hills and Darlinghurst to enjoy new personalised touring in Sydney.
The small-group walking tour uncovered hidden urban art galleries and laneways full of colourful history. Together we discovered vintage fashion gems and sampled perfectly aged cheeses, passed some of the city’s hottest restaurants and cool design hubs .. and met the engaging locals behind so many of these secret Sydney finds.
Our knowledgeable and passionate guide, Sophia, shared the legends of Sydney’s gritty razor gang history and brought thought-provoking artworks to life with her fascinating insights. Walking at an easy pace and during a coffee-stop at one of Sophia’s favourite local café, there was plenty of opportunity to enjoy relaxed banter and casual conversation about the city past and present, about food and fashion, art and architecture, vintage and visionary, culture and creativity. For me, the coffee stop was one of the morning’s highlights and not only for the great coffee ! An inspiring not-for-profit business that celebrates Australia’s multiculturalism and vibrancy through fabulous food, art-exhibitions and events. It is exactly these kinds of places and spaces that Culture Scouts seek out and share .. a number of these fabulous local finds are already on my list to revisit.
Three hours later, a group of locals and international visitors (I was joined by two Sydneysiders, a couple from the US and a couple from the Netherlands), we all left the tour having discovered and delighted in some of the city’s most creative hidden gems.
