Impressions of Voyages Lizard Island

Southern Crossings Australia Senior Consultant, Polly Brain, recently visited Queensland's luxurious Lizard Island .."And it would only be fair to say that my experience on the island surpassed all my previously high expectations".

From the moment our small charter aircraft (scheduled flights are also available twice daily) left Cairns, we embarked on a stunning flight over the ribbon reefs and sand bank islands of the Great Barrier Reef below us. A very scenic 60 minutes later we touched down on a tiny piece of paradise floating in the turquoise sea and fringed by white sandy beaches.

We were greeted at the airstrip and transported to the main lobby where we were welcomed by the General Manager and a refreshing fruit cocktail. On his suggestion, we head straight to lunch and, whilst totally preoccupied with the delicious food and the idyllic surrounds, we didn't notice that our rooms had been allocated and our bags delivered - and we hadn't even seen a check-in desk. A seamless experience that started our stay off perfectly and an unobtrusive style of thoughtful service that continued throughout our time on Lizard.

Once settled, exploring the island was an absolute treat. With an unsurpassable selection of "off the beach" coral reefs, clam gardens and thousands of brightly coloured fish to marvel at, getting into the water was a must.

Whilst snorkelling and scuba diving (including a visit to the famed "Cod Hole") are undeniable highlights of a stay at Voyages Lizard Island, there is no shortage of other attractions and distractions.

The lure of landing a Black Marlin (August to December with Lizard Island hosting the very popular Lizard Island Classic in October), draws anglers from around the globe. Year round game fishing trips and charters serve up hearty catches of Mackerel and Trevally (advance booking is recommended).

Romantics are also spoilt for choice with sunset champagne sails, candlelit beachside dinners and picnics enjoyed on a private beach topping the list.

For the active and adventurous, Lizard Island provides glass bottom paddle skis, motorised dinghies, catamarans, tennis courts, a freshwater swimming pool and dozens of island walks and nature trails.

Those seeking pure relaxation and indulgence will also have found their haven: no mobile phone reception, no televisions in the rooms and no children under 12; secluded white sandy beaches, the indulgent Azure Spa (where again advance bookings are recommended) and all inclusive dining of the highest standards.

Throughout the island, friendly service was provided with the utmost ease and attention to our individual needs.

The rooms are spacious with modern furnishings and luxurious touches (like Bose sound systems and aromatherapy oil burners). Choose from a Sunset Point Villa located on a hill a short walk from the main lodge with filtered sea views over Sunset Beach or Anchor Bay; or stay in the Anchor Bay Rooms or Suites close to the main lodge with immediate access to the beautiful soft sandy beach. The Pavilion offers the epitome of privacy and luxury; set on a point with its own private plunge pool and sundeck enjoying 270 degree views.

After watching the sunset from the daybed on our balcony, it was time for sunset cocktail in the restaurant followed by an exquisite three course dinner with accompanying wines served in tranquil tropical surrounds.

Lizard Island is a haven of luxury accommodation and fine food delivered in a truly stunning and untouched island paradise. It is an idyllic getaway for experiencing the Great Barrier Reef in style and taking a few days to simply unwind.
