Covering a distance of nearly 3000km (over 2 nights on board), The Ghan Legendary Australian Rail Journey bisects the country North - South showcasing a rolling panorama of Australian diversity from Adelaide and the renowned South Australian vineyards to the spectacular desert plains of the outback and Australia's 'Red Centre', through to the lush tropical 'Top End', culminating in the multicultural northern capital of Darwin.
Named after the Afghan cameleers whose 'camel trains' provided supplies to the early telegraph and railway outposts and remote outback stations, The Ghan's weekly (and twice weekly in peak season) service offers "Whistle Stop" tours of Alice Springs and Katherine en-route or the opportunity to disembark and stay a little longer in Alice Springs to explore Australia's fascinating Red Centre: from Ayers Rock (Uluru) to Kings Canyon and the Olgas (Kata-Tjuta).
Accommodation is provided in various classes of comfort from the 'Red Daynighter Seats' to comfortable 'Gold Service' cabins and the 'Chairman's Carriage' with its own dining room and accommodation for up to 8 guests. However, it is the newly introduced 'Platinum Service' which brings another level of style and comfort to Australian rail travel, rivaling even the best in world-class train services.
Platinum Service cabins are offered on The Ghan service from March to November, providing deluxe accommodation including double beds, spacious ensuites, 24 hour room service and panoramic windows through which to absorb the stunning scenery on both sides of the train. Delicious, freshly prepared meals are served in the Queen Adelaide dining car, whilst the Desert Explorer Lounge is a perfect place to enjoy a drink with friends at any time of day.
Connections with The Indian Pacific (Sydney - Perth rail journey) are also possible in Adelaide.
