Throw a line in just about anywhere along Australia’s vast coastline or cast a fly in its myriad of rivers, lakes and billabongs .. and before long, you are sure to be hooked on the region’s great fishing.

Menus across the country boast intriguing delicacies from Barramundi and Balmain Bugs to Mud Crabs and Yabbies, providing an alluring promise for any angling aficionado.

Tasmania’s fly fishing is world class. The Central Plateau’s glassy glacial lakes and crystal clear streams are just brimming with trophy sized catches of wary wild brown and crafty rainbow trout.

Anglers from around the globe are lured to the tropical waters surrounding Lizard Island by the adrenalin pumping excitement of chasing the speedy and sleek giant Black Marlin.

For 100% adventure, it’s hard to beat a Barramundi heli-fishing expedition to the remote gorges of the breathtaking Top End.

There are however countless other opportunities for novices and experienced enthusiasts alike to test their skill and try their luck in a host of stunning locations right across the country.

Scoop yourself a mud crab on Queensland’s Gold Coast or cast a line into the surf along Fraser Island’s Seventy Five Mile beach to land a generous catch of whiting or bream.

With reefs aptly named, Hook, Line, Sinker, Bait and Net there’s no doubting the fishing in the Whitsundays is good. Spend the day out on your resort’s luxury launch to chase Spanish mackerel and reel in coral trout.

Spear a red emperor for dinner on Haggerstone Island or cruise the rainforest fringed waters of the Daintree to catch a jungle perch.

Chase some of the gutsiest fighters in the sea in the remote waters off Arnhem Land, where barracuda, sailfish and giant trevally are among the locals of the deep.

Golden snapper and tasty coral trout dart between the artificial reefs and wrecks in Darwin’s tropical harbour, whilst Mangrove Jack and Black Bream lurk in the mangrove lined brown rivers and estuaries of the Top End. Stay at an outback station or cruise the Kimberley coast to fish some of the most remote rivers in Australia.

Cast a fly among the schools of tasty trevally, hungry cod and delicious snapper; giant herring, enormous sail fish and massive cobia that swim at the end of your line in the turquoise lagoons, coastal reefs and open waters off Ningaloo; or net yourself a magnificent marron (freshwater crayfish) in the tranquil waters of the Margaret River region.

Dive the rocky ledges of the Limestone coast to grab a prized rock lobster or cast a line in the region’s shallow lagoons to pull out a tasty Coorong Mullet. Or simply dangle a line with the locals from one of Kangaroo Island’s pretty piers to catch your fill of delicious King George Whiting.

Chase Blue Fin Tuna off the coast of the Great Ocean Road or head out from the Mornington Peninsula where the whiting are biting in Port Philip Bay. Land yourself a record breaking swordfish off Tasmania’s Freycinet Peninsula or hook a double headed wrasse in Lord Howe Island’s pristine waters.

Rod, reel or fly; reef, ocean or river; from a pier, a beach or a boat. Whether you choose the adrenalin pumping thrill of a fishing safari in the wildest waters or the contemplative solitude of casting a line in remote peaceful waterways, Australia’s fishing adventures serve up a smorgasbord of seafood rewards.

Note: A number of fishing regulations are in force to protect the precious supply of various species in different parts of the country. Check with guides or local authorities regarding licence requirements and other regulations (such as catch and release practices, legal size limits etc).
