Flora, Fauna & Wildlife Rugged sandstone mountains and dry creek beds lined with river red gums are a quintessential Australian scene – best enjoyed, chilled glass of wine in hand, at sunset as the wildlife emerges in the cool light of dusk to drink at the waterholes. From emus to kangaroos, over 300 species of colourful birdlife and unique mammals abound in the Flinders Ranges, roaming alongside ancient fossils – the windows into some of the earliest life forms on the planet.
Homesteads, Gardens & Arts Stay in the sweeping stone homestead of Arkaba Station with the current owners of this working property or enjoy the privacy of your own stone ‘coach house’ (with spectacular views from the bath !). See the works of talented local and aboriginal artists at one of the regular (September – October) art exhibitions hosted by Arkaba and other surrounding galleries.
Soft Adventure This most ancient of landscapes provides a natural playground for adventure lovers. See a working sheep station in action – tour the property and the spectacular surrounding countryside by 4wd or light aircraft, on foot (following the great Heysen Trail which runs through the property), or on horseback, guided by a local aboriginal elder. For the real adventure seekers, rock climbing and abseiling the craggy sandstone outcrops is rewarded with breathtaking vistas over the Flinders Ranges.
Farms & Outback Stations Arkaba is one of the oldest pastoral properties in Australia, established by two English doctors in 1851. The scenically spectacular 63,000acre (100 sq miles) working sheep station is home to 7000 merino sheep. Visitors to the property in September are invited to the historic woolshed to watch the sheep shearers’ quick hands at work.
